TRADITIONAL CHINESE MEDICINE

Introduction

•The origins of traditional Chinese medicine go back a few thousand years. According to the Chinese, the secret to our health lies within us and the surrounding environment. Chinese medicine thus pays attention not only to a person’s health, but also to their psychological and physical condition as well as their diet. Its fundamental message is above all to prevent and not treat. The second important aspect of natural Chinese medicine is to halt the development of existing conditions. Both these approaches make up the Chinese health concept, also known as the ’longevity culture’.

Global research on longevity shows that 3 out of 5 regions with the greatest average lifespan are regions where Chinese culture is present or whose origins are Chinese. Traditional Chinese medicine is based upon harmony between ying and yang and on the theory of five elements assuming the whole of nature as well as the cosmos consist of five basic elements: earth, metal, water, wood and fire. All that is can be assigned to one of them. Many of TIENS supplements refer to the Five Element Theory. However TIENS, while drawing from the riches of Chinese traditional medicine, at the same time combines this with the latest achievements in biotechnology. TIENS has developed an entire programme for sustaining a good physical and psychological condition using dietary supplements spanning across four steps: purification, replenishing, strengthening and balancing.

TRUST THE NATURE
The concept of maintaining health promoted by TIENS is based on the main rule of Chinese medicine to prevent and not treat. It includes four stages: purification, replenishing, strengthening and balancing. TIENS has grouped the products it offers into series corresponding to these stages in a way that everyone can choose a supplement best fitted for the current needs of the body.

PURIFICATION:

The first step is purification. A fast pace of life, pollution of the environment, an unhealthy diet all contribute to an increased level of various toxins in the body. This negatively reflects on the mood and leads to many disorders. Hence, heavy metals, components of artificial colorants and preservatives added to food and beverages, for instance, begin accumulating in the body. This leads to a drop in assimilation of nutrients, which means the intake of supplements can become less effective. The body is able to eliminate only a fraction of the toxins. The supplements from the purification series are designed to support the body in the process of purification — elimination of toxins from the digestive tract, lungs, skin, blood vessels — so all the organs and systems of the body can function optimally. The composition of the preparations in the purification series includes for example green tea extract, lotus leaves, rhubarb or fish oil.

Strengthening:
TIENS has grouped the products it offers into series corresponding to these stages in a way that everyone can choose a supplement best fitted for the current needs of the body. After the steps of purification and replenishing, one may move forward to the following stage of strengthening. The supplements from this group support the respiratory, circulatory and digestive systems as well as the urinary tract, providing the body with the ingredients necessary for their proper function. The composition of the preparations from the strengthening range includes for example zinc, calcium and soya.

Replenishing:
This indicates we must supply the body with the nutrients that can help regulate the function of all the organs and systems, and thereby strengthen the natural defence mechanisms of the body. The replenishing series preparations contain, for instance: spirulina, Chinese dates, cordyceps (medicinal fungus), garlic and linseeds.
